Dan Zanes and Elizabeth Mitchell are among today’s foremost creators of handmade, independent, age-desegregated music. He has won a Grammy, she has been nominated for one, and both have garnered tremendous critical acclaim. Dan Zanes occupies a unique place in American music where sea shanties, North American and West Indian folk music, play party songs, English music hall, the spirit of early rock ‘n’ roll, and soulful originals collide. He has toured the world sharing original social music with enthusiastic crowds of kids and kid sympathizers. People magazine called him “the crown prince of contemporary kid’s music,” and according to the Los Angeles Times, “Dan Zanes is enriching the field with his dance-party, hootenanny for the 21st century style…combining uncompromising vocal and instrumental artistry and a muscular pop beat with an all-embracing, downstyle that harks back to the days when sing-alongs in the parlor brought families and
friends together.” Elizabeth Mitchell has been recording and performing music for children and families since 1998 and was the first new children’s music artist signed to Smithsonian Folkways in the 21st century. She released her first Folkways album, You Are My Little Bird, in 2006. That fall, Elizabeth appeared on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” talked about the importance of singing to your children, and sang a song live with her husband, Daniel, and daughter, Storey, who was five years old at the time. The album was voted Best Children’s Album that year by the critics of Amazon.com and garnered generous critical praise. Her 2012 album, Little Seed: Songs for Children by Woody Guthrie, was released as part of the celebration of Guthrie’s 100th birthday.
Between them, Zanes and Mitchell have collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Andrew Bird, Debbie Harry, Natalie Merchant, Lou Reed, Ziggy Marley, Levon Helm, Angelique Kidjo, Peggy Seeger, Philip Glass, John Sebastian, and many more. Although they have long been friends, they pursued parallel but separate paths until they undertook their first collaborative recording, Turn Turn Turn, which Zanes’s Festival Five Records released in 2013. These two pals revel in the joy of making music together and are thrilled to share the stage for this special show. They’ll be backed by Mitchell’s band, You Are My Flower, which will include her daughter, Storey, and singer/fiddler Simi Stone.

“Zanes’ kids’ music works because it is not kids’ music; it’s just music—music that’s unsanitized, unpasteurized, that’s organic even”— New York Times magazine.

“(Zanes is) the family-music genre’s most outspoken and eloquent advocate”––Time magazine.

“(Mitchell creates) children’s music that adults — or at least parents — can enjoy. More important, though, it serves as a gentle corrective to kid culture’s ongoing sensory assault.”–LA Times

“Elizabeth Mitchell has bridged the gap between independent rock and post cradle kiddo-core…Gorgeously lucid.” –Chicago Reader

This concert is preceded by a Song-Gathering & Music-Making Workshop with Dan Zanes for ages 5-12 (10AM-noon, separate registration needed) and followed by a meet and greet with the musicians!
