Jane Bunnett & Maqueque

Saturday, July 28 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

$11 - $25

Renowned Canadian flutist and soprano saxophonist Jane Bunnett has been introducing jazz and world music audiences to some of the finest Cuban musicians for more than thirty years. First here in 2001 with Spirits of Havana, Bunnett returned to The WKC as part of our 40th Anniversary All-Start line up in 2015. However, a State Department computer glitch left most of her band Maqueque (an all-female group, translated as “spirit of a young girl”) stuck in Cuba! Jane was able to put together an exciting alternate lineup for her shows at The WKC and Rochester Jazz Fest that year– including popular Cuban singer/songwriter/actress Melvis Santa, who is now part of the Maqueque lineup for 2018, along with Yissy Garcia on drums, Dánae Olano on piano, Magdelys Savigne on batá drums and congas, Elizabeth Rodriguez on violin and vocals, and Celia Jiménez on bass.
This long-anticipated show promises to be a broadly appealing and exhilarating blend of hard-driving Afro-Cuban rhythms, folkloric influences, and contemporary jazz.

$25 ($28 day of); $22 WKC Member ($25 day of); $11 under 19

“Maqueque entranced listeners with a clave-induced set of Afro-Cuban, booty-shaking world jazz that would have made Dizzy smile”—DownBeat.

“…Bunnett integrates her flute and soprano sax into the Cubans’ music, giving us the best of the past and the contemporary” —JazzTimes.
