Music for Shakespeare

This four-week workshop culminates in performing the music for the August 2 & 3rd performances at the Shakespeare in the Valley event.
Ages 12-19. (Schedule allows for joint enrollment with WKC Shakespeare acting workshop.)

Variable schedule:
1st 2 weeks: M-F, from 11am to 1pm
3rd week: M-F, July 22-26, from 11am to 2pm
4th week M-F, July 29-August 2, 1pm to 5pm (plus late night dress rehearsals on Wednesday & Thursday)

This music workshop for Shakespeare in the Valley is open to singers and musicians, ages 12-19, who have experience in music. Players will be responsible for bringing their own instruments and should have at least basic proficiency with them. The workshop will form the band for Shakespeare in the Valley’s production of Macbeth, and will play and sing the score for the show. During the workshop, participants will be guided through the basics of performance in a theatrical setting, as well as writing music for the theatre. The group will write at least one of the songs in the show, and each participant will be guided through writing their own standard-style song.

Stephen has been writing music for theatre for nine years, beginning while he was still training and working as an actor. In 2013, he produced a musical take on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, called What You Will. He has written music for works including Highly Impractical Theatre’s Three Sisters, Linked Dance Theatre’s Freaks Don’t Cry, several productions with This is Not a Theatre Company, as well as Dominic Finocchiaro’s brut. He has composed and music directed for Shakespeare in the Valley since 2017. Stephen is currently earning a master’s degree at NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.
