From the Curator: The barn photographs of Tom Nershi on display are a small part of sensitive, documentary project he has now been deeply immersed in for the past number of years, an outgrowth of his original vision to capture for posterity the remaining, great, hand-built grand farm buildings, within the Town of Jefferson NY, that housed the once flourishing local dairy trade. Nershi has lived and worked within the town of Jefferson for a very long time, and so these are deeply powerful and respectful images, that formally, and emotionally, harken to a time that once was, has past, and sadly will never be again.
– Alan Herman
Tom Nershi in 1975, already having a fondness for dairy farms, and having majored in architecture in college, bought a piece land in Jefferson, NY, where he hand-built a house, raised a family, and worked as a carpenter, cabinet maker, frame builder, stained glass artist, and began to pursue a deepening interest in photography. In addition to photography, Tom is an avid music enthusiast, and has for many years combined both passions, regularly documenting live performances in wide ranging venues, including countless performances at the West Kortright Centre, pretty much since the doors first opened.
