We all enjoy popular music in one form or another – it’s everywhere, impossible to avoid, and often gets stuck in our heads. What are some of your family’s favorite pop songs? What songs do you like to sing? It’s important to understand that many years ago, popular music often meant jazz. From jazz, we get the formula of a singer plus a band and all the fun and grooviness we associate with the pop songs we love.

Through this fun and interactive one-hour program, our discussions and exciting performances of favorite tunes will show how jazz musicians often take popular songs and use them to create their own new music. Do you and your kids ever make up melodies or sing freely while music is playing? In jazz, we call this improvisation, and it is both a natural thing to do and very important to the artform. Your children will also have the opportunity to try their own improvisations with the band! No prior musical knowledge is required.

In accordance with state and local requirements, we need to collect all attendee info for contact tracing (full name, birthdate, phone number, address). To speed up the process, you can email this information to info@westkc.org or arrive a little early to sign in at the ticket tent.

We'll also be performing temp checks and the standard health screening questionnaire. The WKC mask mandate is still in effect (required while walking around, but optional once seated with your group & optional for children under 2.)

Our grounds open at 1pm, so if you'd like to come early with a picnic, please do!

We kindly ask that caregivers help wrangle their children with regards to social distancing. The event starts at 2pm and runs for about an hour.

Seats are first-come, first-served. We have socially distanced tables and chairs under the tent or you may want to bring a chair or blanket for lawn seating.
