Alan Herman: Botanicals
August 8-September 28, 2024
Reception: August 23th, 5-7PM
Alan Herman grew up in Greenwich Village, attended Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts) intending to major in photography, but in his freshman year, shifted to sculpture, and received a BFA, an MFA, and soon after graduation, an NEA grant. For a number of years he made paintings as well. He has shown his work widely, and garnered a significant amount of critical acclaim. Photography has informed all of Herman’s work…he took his first photograph at age 3, at 8 he got a Brownie Hawkeye, at 11 he bought his first 35mm camera, and assembled a darkroom in his bedroom closet. By 13, he began working summers and school holidays for a NY fashion photographer, and eventually had a long career designing sets for film and TV commercials.. Herman has never stopped taking photographs. The past 40 years he has split his time between a farmhouse in Jefferson, NY and a loft in New York City.
